Teachers and Literacy Coordinators Collaborate to Improve Early Literacy in Rural Communities
Last Updated: July 05, 2016
The schools are part of LIREC - Literacy Innovation in Rural Education through Collaboration - a project that was awarded a federal
Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant in October 2014. Lead partners include the
Rural School and Community Trust, the
National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the
Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL).
First Book, a non-profit organization that offers deeply discounted, high-quality children's literature to eligible groups, is another partner.
In December 2015, more than twenty LIREC teachers and literacy coordinators convened in Raleigh, North Carolina and shared their strategies for improving early literacy in their rural communities. Through the collaboration, teachers network with other rural teachers and share practices designed to support continuous literacy improvement, learning, and apprenticeship of new staff and members.
